Memory Lane or a Call to the Future?  You Choose!

By Dennis P. Sunderman
NAIFA-California President 2007-2008

For those of you that entered the life insurance business in the 60’s, 70’s or early 80’s, remember the “good old days” when meetings were busting at the seams with agents, speakers, and sponsors.  We used to look forward to Life Underwriters meetings, where we could learn new sales ideas and to soak-up as much as possible from the experienced agents in the crowd.  My local, now NAIFA-Long Beach, would hold an annual “Sales Jamboree” aboard the Queen Mary and pack 600 plus guests and 50 vendors in the Grand Salon.  We would listen to the industry giants and stuff our bags with the newest product brochures and trendy promotional stuff!  I sure miss all of that!

We have seen numerous changes that have slowly chipped away at the big crowds and good times we used to share.  Most notably, and frankly the biggest excuse we all use regarding membership, is that all of the General Agencies left town for the major cities, leaving only district offices or independent agencies.  Secondary, is the complete loss of the General Agent 100% agency culture.

So here’s a good question.

Did the need for a strong NAIFA leave town with the big agencies?

The answer is definitely not!

My respect for NAIFA, especially legislative advocacy, has grown over time, even to the point that I believe we are in business today, because of the protection we have received from NAIFA.  The need for advocacy is as great today, if not greater, than it was when I came into this business.

Larry Lambert, one of the “giants” in our business, once shared a little advice with me.  It went something like this. “In turbulent times people and organizations need structure”.  I have never forgotten that statement, which leads me to this month’s message.

NAIFA provides the structure we need to grow and protect our business!

Local meetings provide sales ideas, training, and networking opportunities.  They provide legislative updates, and provide the forum for new advisors to learn how to grow their business, and how to participate in community service opportunities.  NAIFA helps to develop the leader within, and provides a home base for ALL practice specialties, not just health insurance or financial planning.

We are starting to see a re-involvement of insurance companies that recognize the importance of a stronger NAIFA.  To view a list of companies that are providing incentives for agents to become members, please click on the following link.  http://www.naifa.org/about/corporatepartnerships/documents/CorpPartnershipHighlights.pdf.

In conclusion, please register to attend “A New Beginning” our annual business meeting, and the Day on the Hill in Sacramento, May 19-20, 2008.

One final thought.  Even ordinary people who work together can have extraordinary results.  We are stronger together!!

    Member Benefits

By Michael K. Fiamingo, LUTCF
Chair Member Benefits

With only two months left in the fiscal year, offering a strong monthly program for May and June can boost meeting attendance.  For your May meeting most locals vote on the slate of new and continuing Board members and June is the installation meeting for the new Board of Directors who start on July 1st.

Adding a YAT meeting before the regular meeting and offering a CE after the regular luncheon or breakfast meeting can provide something for everyone.

Coming up in May, we have the NAIFA California annual meeting on Monday May 19th and our annual Day on the Hill on Tuesday May 20th.  There will be excellent speakers offered at the annual meeting and vendors offering many valuable services and products to our members.

On Tuesday May 20th, you can have the opportunity to speak with your legislator and share your concerns about legislation that will affect your business and your clients who are all constituents of the legislators.  If you haven't done this before, we will discuss how it is done, what to talk about, the do's and don'ts when meeting with legislators, and you can even tour the governor's office while at the capital.

There are less than two weeks left in the Mad Dash for membership which ends on April 30th.  With a final push you can earn credits to cover your cost to attend the annual State meeting and the Day on the Hill by bringing in new members or converting lapsed members back into active member status.  For details just visit our website at www.naifacalifornia.org

We hope to see you at the May meetings!

Monthly Business Sales Idea

Target Market Your Product

A good sales idea for the multiline agent is to determine your most competitive product and target market that product.

For example, if you are strong in contractor’s liability, join associations related to that industry.  And remember that givers gain.  There is more satisfaction in giving than just being on the take.  Whenever possible, refer your customers to members of that association.
