Happy New Year to my fellow NAIFA Members! I hope your year is off to a successful start. Your NAIFA volunteers and staff at the Local, State and National level are looking to introduce some exciting new tools and resources in 2016. Before we roll out the new, let’s take a look and see how 2015 looked for your State Association…

Membership: As of this writing, NAIFA-California continues to be the largest state in the Federation with 2,998 members. Our local associations and individual recruiters have done a tremendous job helping to strengthen our ranks with the Pilot Membership Program as well as renewed partnerships with career agencies and the independent agent channels.  It is paramount that our association, and you as valued members, reach out and engage our new members (especially pilot members) and share how NAIFA can help them thrive in our industry. The Pilot program, which ended on an individual recruitment basis on December 31, 2015, will continue for some of our career and independent agencies.  Get out and recruit a peer and help strengthen their career.

Political Action Committee (PAC):  The good news is our PAC fund is moving in the right direction, but unfortunately, even as the largest state in the Federation, we are not the largest state PAC Fund.  As a state, we have a few contributors who give generously, but frankly, we need a wider base of contribution from ALL members.  If you are giving to the PAC, thank you and please consider increasing your contribution. If you aren’t giving to the PAC, now is the time to get in the game. Your PAC contribution gives you immediate superiority to the advisor who isn’t involved and engaged in matters that affect his or her clients’ future. As a member of NAIFA, I know you care about your career and our industry, and as a PAC contributor, our legislators will know loud and clear as well.  Our NAIFA PAC year is January 1 through December 31. You can start with as little as a monthly credit card contribution of $8.33. Go to www.naifa.org to get started.

Political Involvement Committee (PIC): Our relationships with our legislators in California are actively helping us craft laws that affect the entire country. Although we have relationships with 100 percent of our federal legislators, we are lacking meaningful connections with many of our state legislators. We need your help. Do you know one of our state or federal legislators? He or she may be a friend from church, a client, your kids play softball together, etc. If you have a friendly ear of one of our esteemed public servants, we want to know about it.  Contact me or our State Government Relations Chair, John Davidson to learn how you can get involved.

What’s New and on the Horizon:

In the coming weeks…NAIFA-California will be rolling out its fully integrated website and client management system. We made a commitment to you as members to continually improve communications, and this website and CRM will be a huge part of a more effective NAIFA-California.

February 24 Day On the Hill, Sacramento—We have secured our Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones and our Lobbyist Shari McHugh to kick off our Day on the Hill event. This is your best opportunity to make an impact and get our NAIFA brand in front of the people who can dramatically affect your life and livelihood.

May 12-13 NAIFA-California Career Advancement Conference, Redondo Beach: New Location, new speakers, incredible value. This event is not just for NAIFA leaders. This day and a half is focused on helping you hone your skills and make the connections that count. Attend, Exhibit, Learn, Connect, Grow.

May 24-25: Congressional Fly In, Washington D.C.—Can NAIFA beat the 800 attendees who made a HUGE impact at last year’s fly in? I hope we can. Your voice is needed now more than ever on issues that will affect your practice. If you haven’t attended a fly-in, prepare to be amazed.

While there is still much work to do in our association year, I am incredibly proud of what we have been able to accomplish. Thank you for your membership, your contribution to the PAC and your contribution to making our industry one of the greatest in the country!
