I just returned from our State Day on the Hill and am incredibly proud of our association for making the effort to keep our industry strong. For this month’s President’s message, I’d like to share my fellow board member, Mimie Yoon-Lee’s thoughts of her time in our state’s Capitol for Day on the Hill….

Day On the Hill- Mimie Yoon Lee

“They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like us.  Don’t be nervous.  Just talk to them.” That’s what Mike Ables, our National Committeeperson, told us as we prepped to hit our Capitol here in California.

For the last five years, I have served on our local board for the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA).  When I joined NAIFA 11 years ago, a manager told me that it was required and that I had to eventually become a board member.

I thought we at Lincoln knew everything, certainly more than anyone else in the industry. As you can expect, I QUICKLY found out that we didn’t know everything and that there were plenty of successful people in the industry who quite possibly knew more than us! I was hooked.

Now, I am one of two women serving on California’s 12-member state board, and we just completed our Day on the Hill, which is exactly what it sounds like. 75 of us from across the state hit Sacramento on February 24 to advocate for our industry and, most importantly, for you and your business.

To prepare, we heard from the California State Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, listened to our lobbyist, Shari McHugh, (a super strong and smart female J), and connected with other NAIFA-California members to strategize on our impending meetings.

If you have never connected with your legislators to tell them what you do, you should. You’re missing a part of your duties as an advisor and a business owner.  Who you are, what you do, and why you do it are important not only for your family but for your clients’ families, as well.

Legislators determine policies and pass legislation that directly affect how you conduct your business, how you manage it, and how you profit. Many of them, you will find out, do not understand the human element of our industry and the day-to-day efforts that we put forth for our clients. They need to know what our business is all about and how their actions can enhance, make, or break the value of the work we provide our clients.

It was tremendous to walk through the halls of our state capitol, meet with those making important decisions, and make connections that we can build on. We are in a relationship business with our clients, and it’s a relationship business with these legislators.

Lincoln has a PAC as does NAIFA. These PACs fight for your ability to efficiently operate your business. When something starts to creep up that shouldn’t be there, the Shari’s speak up and work tirelessly on your behalf.  That’s why it’s important that you are aware of the interrelationship of your legislators to our industry and to you. It’s grassroots. It’s human.

Plan to attend next year’s Day on the Hill!  In fact, I am going to our nation’s capitol on May 24-25 for NAIFA’s BIG Day On The Hill in Washington, D.C. (AKA The Congressional Conference), and walk those halls to make sure they know that we not only do right by our clients but we do great by our clients.  If you are interested in joining me and thousands of other advisors in our nation’s capital, contact me, or go to http://www.naifa.org/events/congressional-conference to register.  Don’t forget to let me know you are going!

I’m guessing those on THE Hill put their pants on one leg at a time too.
