I am so honored to be serving as your 2017-2018 NAIFA-California President. California is the crown jewel of our Federation. This is due to the amazing leaders we have had over the last 125 years. If you attended the Career Advancement Conference (CAC) in San Francisco in June, we were surrounded by past great leaders, as well as many great leaders of the future.

We recognized one of those great leaders in San Francisco. Terry M. Kaltenbach, CLU, ChFC, CAP, was selected to receive the Norman G. Levine Award. I must admit that I personally did not know Terry.  It was my pleasure to see how much he meant to so many people at the Career Advancement Conference. He and his wife Linda were warm, friendly folks and open to speaking to everyone they met. The committee who picked Terry could not have done a better job. Congratulations, Terry! Norm would have been proud that you received this award named after him.

I want to thank the organizing committee and the outgoing board for their support in making the Career Advancement Conference the success it was. Thank you also to Shane Westhoelter for his outstanding leadership for the past year. I know I will be depending on his support this year.

We have been busy preparing for the new NAIFA-California year.  With everything that is confronting our industry, we must work harder and be more active in educating our lawmakers and clients on issues that affect our industry.

We all know that the California legislature is proposing the Single Payer Health Plan. Recently, the bill has been tabled for at least one more year. A big part of delaying that decision was due to agents like you who belong to, and support NAIFA, and let your voices be heard. Working with the California Association of Health Underwriters (CAHU), we have a commitment to our policyholders to protect them against things that are not in their best interest.

Every so often we may call upon you to write or call your representative to educate them on the laws Sacramento or Washington are considering. Believe me when I tell you, when we have our Day on the Hill and talk to the representatives, they depend on us to educate them on subjects they do not truly know how they affect our clients and their constituents.

Your state trustees and officers are committed to help you and your local association anyway we can.  We are offering two LEAD training sessions on how to run your own local association. One session will be in Danville (North) on July 25, and the other in San Dimas (South) on July 26. There will be breakout sessions for Presidents, Secretary/Treasurers, Membership Chairs and anyone else who would like to attend. Other covered subjects include the latest information on the Quality Member Experience (QME) changes happening at NAIFA National. This is a very important subject that will directly impact your local association, as well as your state and national associations. QME will be voted on at the NAIFA-National Convention in Orlando, on September 8-10, 2017. You need to make sure your voice is heard.

I am assigning each local association a California state trustee. They will be responsible to ensure they keep you updated on both NAIFA-California and National. They are there to support you in whatever way you need. They will call your association each month and visit quarterly. As promised at the Career Advancement Conference, I will try to visit each association this year. As stated before, we are here to serve you.

Again, I am truly honored to serve as your President. I hope to meet all of you this year. Have a great year. We will see you at LEAD training on July 25 and 26. Remember that “NAIFA makes a difference!”
